What is TMJ or TMD?

March 28th, 2013

Have you ever heard of TMJ or TMD? TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint (the joint on either side of your jaw), and TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. In colloquial terms, these are used interchangeably to refer to pain in a person’s jaw. More specifically, a person with TMD may have sore jaw muscles or pain in the jaw joint. These symptoms may be accompanied by headaches and ringing in the ears, as well as trouble eating or sleeping. Sometimes a person may hear noises (clicking, popping, grating sounds), and in severe cases the jaw may become locked open or closed.

Anyone who is suffering from TMD will often require splint therapy. Although it can be difficult to adapt to a splint at first, it is often our TMD patients who are the most grateful for treatment because of the significant decrease in pain they experience!
